About the Role

SchoolHouse Staffing is seeking a dedicated and experienced Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) to support students with visual and mobility impairments in achieving independence and success within their school and community environments. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a lasting impact through specialized instruction, advocacy, and collaborative teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment and Evaluation

• Conduct functional and comprehensive orientation and mobility assessments.
• Contribute to the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) based on evaluation results and student needs.

Instruction and Support

• Deliver direct instruction in orientation and mobility techniques and related assistive technology.
• Adapt instructional materials and environments to ensure accessibility for students with mobility impairments.

Collaboration

• Partner with general and special education teachers to modify learning environments and instructional strategies.
• Work closely with parents, school administrators, related service providers, and community professionals to support student development and access.

Training and Development

• Provide training for school staff on best practices for supporting mobility-impaired students.
• Stay current with trends and research in assistive technology and orientation and mobility practices.

Advocacy and Support

• Advocate for equitable access, safety, and the rights of students with mobility challenges.
• Offer social-emotional guidance and empowerment to students and their families.

Qualifications

Certification

• Valid Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) credential required.

Required Skills and Experience

• Strong understanding of assistive technology tools and adaptive teaching methods.
• Experience with IEP development and conducting orientation and mobility assessments.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
• Knowledge of confidentiality standards and adherence to FERPA and applicable privacy laws.
• Familiarity with school systems, special education regulations, and inclusion best practices.
